Vintage Notes

Growing Season

The 2021 growing season in the Barossa Valley was characterized by cooler than average temperatures and above-average rainfall. Winter and spring saw good rainfall, replenishing soil moisture and setting up the vines for a strong start. Summer was mild with few heat spikes, allowing for gradual and even ripening of the grapes. These conditions led to a later than usual harvest, with picking dates extending into April for some vineyards. The extended hang time resulted in grapes with intense flavor development, good natural acidity, and fine tannin structures, promising a vintage of exceptional quality and balance.

Vineyard

The grapes were harvested from the low-yielding vineyards of traditional family growers in the north-western Barossa districts of Moppa, Belvidere, Koonunga, Ebenezer & Light Pass. Each vineyard adds its own exclusive dimension to Pirathon Shiraz and combined they produce the ultimate blend.

Winemaking

The grapes were harvested between March 4 and 13. Following harvest, each individual lot of grapes was crushed into a separate open top fermenter. During fermentation, hand pump-overs gently extracted colour and flavour from the grapes. After fermentation, the wine was matured for 12 months in used French and American 300 L Hogsheads before careful blending. The wine was bottled without fining, ensuring the true expression of the vineyards in the bottle.
